Spritual Tip of the Week
“Hey, don’t be so hard on yourself.”
I heard this story the other day.
An elderly bachelor and an old maid started dating. Each had lived alone for many years, but gradually the old gentleman recognized a real fondness for his female friend. He realized that this must be love. He was terribly shy, and had been afraid to tell her his feelings. Finally one day he mustered up the courage to say, “Let’s get married!” Surprised, she threw up her hands and shouted, “it’s a wonderful idea- but who in the world would have us?”
Its easy for many to drop into that kind of self concept, isn’t it? But remember you are God’s unique creation. There is only one you and that one you is needed in this world. When we forget this, we fall into all sorts of dysfunction and our spiritual lives spiral downward.
This week I invite you to hold this promise to your heart.
Jesus said “I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He/she will do even greater things than these…” –John 14:12
You are important to God and you are much more than you think you are. You are the vessel that God wants to work through to do even greater things.
Institute for Spiritual Growth Offers a New Sunday Class
“Meditative Reading of the Scriptures”
Starting Sunday August 17,the 9 Am Sunday morning Institute for Spiritual Growth classes in August and September will focus on a traditional method of meditative reading of the Scriptures. What this? Its a way of reading and thinking, contemplating and reflecting on Bible Passages.
The class will discuss the current evolution of the ideas of meditation and contemplation, especially as described in Daniel Helminiak’s book, Meditation Without Myth (available in the First MCC Bookstore). Other sources will also be shared. Each Sunday will involve a brief discussion of some aspects of meditative scripture reading, and also time to actually practice the methods in a group setting. Yes, you will learn a new spiritual practice that will make a difference in your life.
